I revisited my love of drawing and painting in 2006 after raising two wonderful boys and watching them leave the nest. Largely self-taught I fell in love with pastels. Once I saw the vast selection of brilliant colors, I was hooked. For the first time in my life I needed to paint, like I needed air. I became obsessed with learning and purchased books, CD’s, and magazines so that I could see what made a painting beautiful and successful. I discovered the world of plein air painting, and the style and immediacy of sensory reaction to light and air. And, again, I was hooked. Though my paintings do not always look like the image before me, I must admit that I am more concerned with color and light and how my paintings make me feel, and hopefully how they make the viewer feel, then whether or not I have achieved a snapshot of the location. I want to capture the moment, not the view.
Though I am still a prisoner of the capitalist world, I yearn for the day that I can paint to my hearts content on a daily basis, and I strive to make each new painting better than the last. I equate the feeling to searching for the perfect wave.
